Wire binding is best described as: - a metal preformed binding, which is clamped through a series of square or circular punched holes on the binding edge.
It is an ideal method for finishing desk calendars, wall calendars and is particularly well suited for cookery books, manuals and other such publications where a lay-flat reading method is required. With a wide range of wire sizes and colours this is an extremely versatile method of binding.
There are various ways on which to wire bind publications. The most common of forms are shown below:
Standard Wire Binding
The most user friendly of wire binding styles. Text pages are bound together with two single leaf covers.
Skip Wire Binding
This form of binding is predominately used for producing calendars with a thumb cut and both D shaped and Euro hanger, specifically where more than 1 unit of wire is required at the fixing point.
Half & Full Canadian Wire Binding
In the view of some customers, one of the drawbacks to wire bound publications is the inability to produce a written spine on the cover and the visibility of the wire. This can, however be largely overcome by introducing a 4pp cover design which allows for the creation of a printed spine. The wire is partially concealed behind a square spine, but has the advantage of the book being able to be opened completely flat without damaging the spine.
Wire Binding onto a Flap
This form of wire binding allows for an expandable inside cover where for example a larger image spread may be required. The binding edge is hidden and the spine is flat. The additional rear flap can then either be glued down to form a double thickness leaf or left loose.
The flexibility of our automated punches and wire binding lines allows us to process books/brochures/calendars from A6 to A2 with thicknesses' ranging from 2mm up to 28mm. at speeds of up to 3500 per hour.
